When you need roofing repairs, it is imperative that you hire a roofer who is professional and qualified and offers the services that you need. While it can be difficult to choose a contractor, especially if you have no experience in hiring one, there are some common mistakes that you want to avoid making.

Inadequate Research

If you do an Internet search for a roofer in Des Moines, you are going to come up with dozens of results. While most of the contractors who are going to come up can do good work and are professional, it is good practice to do your research before you settle on one. Instead of choosing the first company that comes up on your search, check the company through the Better Business Bureau and people in your neighborhood to ensure that you are hiring a roofer who people are satisfied with.

Not Contacting References

Any roofing company that is accustomed to working with homeowners isn’t going to be offended if you ask for references. One mistake that a lot of homeowners make is asking for references but not following through with calling them. Taking the time to call a roofer’s references can tell you if there were any issues with their work and how those issues were resolved. You can also find out if that homeowner would use that roofer again or if they were unhappy overall with them.

Hiring on Price

If you find a contractor who is offering you a significantly lower price than all the other contractors you have hired, chances are there is a reason for it. One possible reason is that they don’t have worker’s compensation and insurance. The absence of these things can end up costing you a lot more in the long run. It is a good idea to get at least three or four different estimates so you can make sure that you aren’t hiring a roofer who is over- or under-charging you. Small differences in price are normal, but if the difference is in the thousands, there is likely a reason for it.
